Year 2 Gallery
Y2 Art
Using natural objects as our inspiration, we looked at line drawings and how the artist had used shading to create depth. We also looked at sculptures created using different materials and the children then created their own clay model of an animal or something natural.
Y2 Science
We have been discussing the different ways that seeds can be ?dispersed? such as by being blown away (dandelion seeds); eaten (by animals and then deposited on the ground); exploding open (violas); floating down a river (coconut seeds); falling to the ground (sycamore seeds); and sticking to animals (sandburs). Afterwards, we had fun creating our own sycamore seeds, which slowly floated down to the ground like twirling helicopters because of their wings, which spin and turn in the wind.
Y2 Science
We have been investigating the conditions that plants need to grow healthily. Starting with a mature basil plant, we placed them in different locations to test which ones stayed healthy: Plant A - watered; Plant B - not watered; Plant C - sunlight; Plant D - dark cupboard; Plant E - warm windowsill; Plant F - fridge. Over the next few weeks we will observe, draw and describe how healthy the different plants are so we can test whether our predictions were correct .
RE
As part of Holy Week, we visited St Thomas' Church to reflect on the events leading up to Jesus' death. The children took it in turns to read about each Station of the Cross and to say a prayer together. Back in the classroom, they created an image to remind them of Jesus' crucifixion and what message it teaches them today.
DT
The children designed and created their own model vehicles. They measured the wood to create an axle and then used a saw to cut the wood. They thought about the features to add to the outside of the vehicle and the inside, including seats and a seatbelt. It was a really messy but fun day!!
Maths
We have been practising our measuring skills both inside and outside the classroom. Measuring with metre sticks proved to be more tricky than rulers and so we had to work together to carefully measure larger items around the playground and then order them from the shortest to longest lengths.
Science
We have been enjoying learning about plants; comparing the germination of seeds and bulbs; and planting our own sunflower seeds. We discussed how, over the coming weeks, our seeds will need water (but not too much!), sunlight and the right temperature to grow into healthy plants.
Talents Fair
Inspired by the Parable of the Talents, we put our talents to good use by painting Easter pebbles to sell at the whole school Talents Fair. We had a very busy stall to manage as we sold over 200 Easter pebbles, inscribed with messages of peace, love, joy and hope.
